UNDERSTANDING THE IMPORTANCE OF MARINE NAVIGATION LIGHTS
It is said
that ‘precaution is better than cure’, similarly, being an enormous boat or
ship, need lighting system too to avoid severe damage to the people sailing and
to the vessel itself; it is the most important aspects of nautical studies
emphasized on in college.
The primary function of navigation lights is
to aid the prevention of any major accident from happening. All boats whether
the big or small need to have these lights as part of the navigation system.
The colors of the lights are specified to be red, green and white. Marine offshore navigation lights are just simply lights colored
electric lights fixed on ships which are used to indicate the size of the ship,
the direction in which the ship is traveling and the angle where they should be
visible. The location, the range, and the arc of visibility of these lights are
fixed by international convection.
IMPORTANCE OF NAVIGATION LIGHTS
·
Lights
aren’t just to indicate one’s own ship for identification by other vessels but
also vice verse. According to them,’ The International Regulation for
Preventing Collision At Sea’ (COLREGS) it is probably the most important aspect in
order to ascertain the status of any vessel in order to take the appropriate
action.
·
Part
C of the COLREGS published by the ‘International Maritime Organization (IMO) is
titled as lights and shapes. ANNEX 1 of the COLREGS deals with the positioning
and technical details of these lights and shapes and had precise data with
regards to many aspects of offshore navigation lights whereas ANNEX 2 deals
with the additional signals for fishing vessel. The visibility of these lights
varies between 3-5 miles and has a longer range of visibility as compared to
smaller boats.
·
These
navigation lights work in a manner that they can indicate an approaching ship about
the position of another ship in its path. This helps the person at the helm
(steering) of the opposite ship to understand how much change needs to be done
in the ship’s route.
·
As
the visibility range of the ship is quite good between 3-5 miles, so if the
boat is installed with an all-around light (fixed to the mast) then there no
need of any further separate lights for the stern and the two sides of the
boats.
Offshore navigation lights are an integral part of marine boats
and ships that are commonly used. These lights are important for so many great
reasons.
